White Wedding Dresses

A white wedding dress

Introduction

It is typical today for a new bride to wear white. Culturally this is viewed as a symbol of the brides virtue. However, it has not always been the case.

History

Queen Victoria is generally credited for starting the tradition of the white wedding dress. In her day an expensive white dress that would only be worn once was a symbol of status that only the wealthy could afford. The dress was white and ornate because it was impractical. Only someone with money would buy a dress so difficult to keep clean for a one time event. Less affluent women would wear their best dress, but would rarely buy a new dress for the event.

The tradition that a white dress symbolizes the brides virtue did not start until after WWII.
